The Gamblers Anonymous program is expanding its donation options, even as problem-gambling campaigns and charities worldwide grapple with funding risks and new challenges.

15 September 2026

While expanding the options for financial contributions from supporters, the program is maintaining its core ethic of open, peer-led help without dues or fees. People can now support GA’s US-run outreach efforts, including international telephonic and online meetings accessible to anyone in need, with electronic card donations processed through popular mobile-payment services.

Gamblers Anonymous says on its website that it accepts financial gifts via check, money order, or electronic payments submitted through popular mobile payment services PayPal, Venmo, and Zelle.

When sending a monetary gift, donors must note on the payment what the gift is for, the GA website says - this includes options for a “Lifeliner,” “Can,” “Group,” or “One-time” donation. According to GA's February 2024 newsletter, a "Lifeliner" is a monthly donation from an individual member. Donations earmarked for the International Service Office are called "Can contributions" - and GA says that any funds given to the ISO are used to support its work and that "outside contributions" are not accepted, easing concerns about independent funding for the support network.

Gamblers Anonymous says on its website that the outreach program runs entirely on donations and accepts no dues or meeting fees. Meetings are free and available to anyone who thinks they may have a problem with gambling - interested people can find a meeting in-person, online, or by telephone by calling 855-2-CALL-GA (222-5542) for meeting details. Why This Matters

The changes to accepted donation types come as charities and nonprofits supporting people influenced by problem gambling everywhere face funding risks and uncertainty.

As electronic payments rise as the preferred contribution method for most people, organizations are modernizing to maintain their financial stability. GA's US-run funds now support outreach including international telephonic and online meetings accessible to anyone in need, helping the group project a stronger image in return for making changes to the donation process.

This broadening of payment types comes as GA expands its presence and services. Volunteers now offer offices and meeting opportunities to people in-virtually anywhere, G.A. says, even in countries and regions where face-to-face help is hard or even impossible to provide.

UK Funding Delays

A report by The Guardian last December found that gambling support charities there could face severe delays and disruption to their work delivering help to people in need as regulators work to implement a new gambling levy, used to fund support services, in 2026. The levy guarantees that money from the multibillion-pound gambling industry is used to help those affected by problem gambling, and uses a pledge mechanism to secure funds.

But slow progress turning the rules into a working system has left charities like GamCare in a precarious position. In a UK parliamentary hearing, CEO Anne Partnership explained that the charity is running on reserves after a year marked by continued civil-servant-created delays. She added that the levy fund could fall short by several hundred thousand pounds, jeopardizing frontline services.

The charity's director of communications, Eilish Hunt, said that while GamCare welcomed new levy fund to help tackle the serious UK problem-gambling crisis, charities could not spend pledged money without a confirmed funding package. She emphasized that urgent action is needed from regulators to keep the system afloat. The warning comes as GamCare remains open here for donations from individuals and businesses at a London postal address.

From mobile-payment services to peer-led funds, organizations with different missions and funding models agree that strong, diverse financial support is needed to tackle problem gambling. Meanwhile, operators and regulators continue to strive for effective programs to fight harm — a goal made more difficult by uncertainty about where funds will flow.

US Gambling Problem-Charity Landscape

The National Council on Problem Gambling, a separate US organization, says it accepts a variety of donations from the public, including secure online funds, money transferred by mail, fax, or email. Yet a separate, community-driven gambling- and gaming-volunteer support network called On-Line Gamers Anonymous has separate standards for handling donations, and only accepts funds from individual members.

For peer-led community groups helping people with gaming and gambling issues, financial support often determines the scope of the organization's outreach.
